  Chapter 1

  A Dance and a Dungeon

Jericho wasn’t threatening in the slightest. If anything, his in-game avatar was very much like his human self. He was average height and a little too skinny with short silver hair and a clean-shaven face. The only abnormal thing about his avatar was the piercing blue eyes which practically glowed.

But his avatar didn’t always look that way, he designed his avatar with long silver hair like one of his favorite video game villains. He quickly realized that long hair, while stylish, was a burden.

He liked to think of the hair issue as the first boss in the virtual reality game Forbidden Arcana. The game had dropped him in a windy plain several miles away from the capital city, Dawn. A fitting name for a starting city in a safe zone.

He could have considered the tutorial boss, a goblin lord, to be the first boss, but it was nothing compared to the fight he had with his “fucking hair” which battled him every step of the way.

That’s why the first thing he did when he finally reached Dawn was find a barber and eliminate the foul beast from his head. The second thing he did was search for the local brothel.

The popularity of Forbidden Arcana online could be summed up in a single word, freedom. Freedom to be what you wanted and play how you wanted. Whether you wanted to spend all of your days crafting and selling potions and all your nights spending your hard-earned money sleeping with barmaids, or whether you wanted to spend all of your days exploring dungeons for treasure and all your nights spending your hard-earned money sleeping with barmaids, it had it all.

Mostly at least, as Jericho found out after nearly six months of attempting to be a mage.

“Wait,” Terra laughed hysterically. She was a tall blonde curvaceous elf and loved flaunting it. She changed out of her hard leather armor into a borderline transparent gypsy outfit as soon as she entered a town. Jericho had met her when she was a noob to Forbidden Arcana and within a short time, she had surpassed him in wealth, power, and achievements. “You’re still trying to be a mage? They’re so fucking useless!”

“I like being a mage,” Jericho smiled but deep down he knew he was an idiot who should change his class to something else. The developers of Forbidden Arcana had a very specific view of classes and skills, they hated them. That being said, they realized the importance of them for players so they kept the classes. A class determined stats and perks.

Melee classes had high strength allowing them to wear plate armor with even higher strength stats, mages had high intellect allowing them to read encrypted texts and give them access to libraries of information, ranger classes had high dexterity increasing their aim and reflexes.

Skills, on the other hand, those were based on actually learning them. If you were a warrior who wanted to train in swordsmanship, go kill some goblins. If you were a ranger who wanted to train in archery, go kill some goblins. So, what did this mean for mages? They were fucked because there was no real-world equivalent to magic.

“Come on!” she laughed while guzzling her wine. She enjoyed being a sloppy drunk and finding excuses to dance topless for coin. Jericho was hoping it’d be one of those nights because although she was a tease who only fucked NPCs, it was a damn good show. “You’re like the most powerful mage in the game, right? And you can’t even beat a level forty elite!”

“I can get all the gear and armor I want crafting and selling potions,” Jericho shrugged. He was technically the fifth most powerful mage, which made him slightly more useless than an average ranger. Terra was a ranger and they were easily the most powerful class in the game. Ranged weaponry in a fantasy world, overpowered. “But I like casting spells.”

“But they’re useless!” she shouted. “I mean, fireballs are cool but the time to create it and aim it is insane and even if you hit the target it's basically a flesh wound unless it’s a mummy. Not to mention ice magic. Talk about useless, you’re literally shooting cold arrows. And once again, takes forever to cast and shatters in a single strike. Face it, J, even when you manage to cast, what the fuck is it, Explosion? It causes as much damage to you as it does your enemy.”

“Hey,” Jericho said defiantly. “I almost have that one figured out.”

“And that’s the issue!” she threw her arms into the air and a large breast popped out of her top, a regular occurrence yet always wonderful. Her pink nipples were perfectly sized for her large chest which flopped around freely on her slender frame. She didn’t bother putting it back in and instead started circling it with her finger. She was the worst type of tease. “Archery, there’s nothing to figure out. You load the arrow, pull the string, aim, let go. If I want an explosion, I buy one of your explosive potions and tie it to the arrow. I want a fireball, I soak the arrow in oil and light it on fire.”

“It’s not the same,” he sighed staring at her tit and thinking about buying a whore to finish off his evening. He hated how much he wanted to fuck her because he knew damn well it wasn’t going to happen. “Have you cast any spells?”

“Yeah,” she smiled as a few other patrons maneuvered to get a better look at her tit. “It’s cool but winning is cooler.”

“But it feels different. It’s not like swinging my staff or shooting a prepackaged spell from a wand. It’s like your entire b
ody tingles from your head to your toes and you’re just unleashing raw power. It’s cathartic.”

“I get it,” she said stretching backward allowing her other breast to pop out. She moved from side to side causing them to sway before settling back in with a lascivious grin. “It feels really cool but lots of things feeling cool. But winning feels the best.”

“I’m hoping once I figure it out, I can have both,” he laughed as the table was finally surrounded. Jericho nodded his head toward the bystanders, “Anyway. Seems like you have your audience, you exhibitionist.”

“Seems like?” she smiled while climbing onto the table. “Here’s the deal boys! I’m here for gold! If you don’t got it, get to the back of the room. If you have it, take a seat at the table! The more you donate to help me pay for elven archery school, the happier I’ll be. And boys, the happier I am, the happier you’ll be!”

The crowd started shifting as Terra tossed Jericho her fairy lamp, a special item allowing her to play whatever music she wanted. Immediately a popular R&B song started playing as she started sashaying back and forth, her tits swaying freely.

“Alright,” a large warrior dropped a pile of a hundred gold coins on the table. “I guess I’m getting this started.”

“Good boy,” Terra teased while fully removing her sheer gypsy top and walking over to the man. She tilted his head back and rubbed her large tits in his face for a few seconds before leaving the top wrapped around his neck as a reward. “I have other garments too boys.”

“Holy shit,” one guy said as several began rummaging through their coin purses. Jericho knew what they were after since it was the same thing he’d be after. He wasn’t judging, he was as depraved as the lot of them. Everybody wanted the G-string beneath her sheer gypsy pants. “I have five hundred gold.”

“Dammit,” another guy at the table said while dropping a hundred gold onto the table. Terra went around collecting money and rubbing her tits in faces before finally removing her pants exposing her long slender legs and perfectly shaped ass. She knelt and spread her legs in front of the man who offered five hundred gold and dropped the pants between them.

“Pick them up with your teeth,” she smiled. “But five hundred is too low for the real prize.”

“Fuck,” another guy said as a few others grunted angrily. That was the norm when she put on a show. There was always a tinge of jealousy. In ten minutes, Terra could make what they made in three days of farming. And since Forbidden Arcana required a scan and was gender locked, guys couldn’t just create their own female avatars to do the same.

“A thousand,” said a feminine voice from the back. Several of the men moved out of the way allowing her through. She was a short petite dark elf dressed in formalwear with violet eyes which contrasted her grey skin and black hair. “But I want to take them off myself.”

“Interesting,” Terra said while dancing sexually to the music. “Fifteen hundred.”

“A thousand,” she said looking around the table. “Unless any of these men want to beat my offer.”

There was a grumble from the surrounding men. Many had given ten or twenty gold while a vast majority gave nothing out of spite and jealousy. But Jericho knew what Terra was really after. She didn’t give a damn about the fifty or hundred gold coins here and there, she was hunting whales. Players with deep pockets and low impulse control. Anybody willing to drop serious coin on her panties once would be willing to drop it again. But only if she reeled them in.

“I suppose I could make an exception,” Terra grinned mischievously, “Since you’re so cute. Why don’t you lay down on the table?”

“Alright,” the girl said while tossing Terra the coins and climbing on the table. Terra immediately took charge and pushed the girl onto her back so she was lying flat on the table. She danced above her, each second getting more and more provocative while teasing the audience by playing with her panties and rubbing her pussy. The girl’s face was turning pink as she stared at Terra’s barely covered pussy.

“Mmm,” Terra moaned as she dropped her ass low, nearly brushing her pussy against the dark elf’s face. She repeated the motion several times as if she were slowly fucking an invisible cock. “Are you going to take them?”

“Right,” the dark elf said while reaching her hands up to the sides. Terra immediately slapped them away. “Ow.”

“No,” Terra giggled while running her hands through the girl’s hair. “No hands.”

“What?” the dark elf’s gray face had become almost completely red. “Do you mean with my,” she gestured toward her mouth.

“Mmhm,” Terra nodded while wiggling her ass in the girl’s face.

The girl gulped as she leaned upward, attempting to be polite as she gripped the front of the G-string in her teeth. She was trembling with embarrassment and excitement as Terra began to slowly rise up as the panties came off. Immediately she bent down and bunched up the panties before poking them into the petite dark elf’s mouth.

“Good girl,” Terra said before dropping back down until her exposed pussy was barely an inch away from the dark elf’s face. She started alternating between playing with her tits and pussy. “Imagine what you would have gotten for fifteen hundred.”

After the song swapped to the next, Terra stood up and allowed the dark elf to get off the table. The girl pulled the panties out of her mouth and stared at them like she just discovered a cache of treasure before stuffing them into her inventory for safekeeping.

The show went on for a quite a while longer as Terra continued to show off her elf ass and pussy for everybody while collecting every bit of gold she could get. Before she was finished, she collected a little over four thousand gold and given the performance she gave to the dark elf, she’d probably milk her for several thousand more before she was finished with her. She put on her leather armor and sat back down on the table.

“That makes me so horny,” she giggled as the crowd dispersed. “It’s so much fun.”

“Don’t suppose I can borrow some coin?” Jericho asked.

“You got a free show,” she teased. “Don’t think I didn’t see you sitting at the table and not paying a cent.”

“If you want to make gold from me, you’re going to need to get a room with me,” he said with a grin.

“Maybe if you change classes,” she said even though they both knew she wouldn’t sleep with any actual players. The fact was sleeping with NPCs was no different than using a sex toy. Even her stripping, since it wasn’t really her body, wasn’t really personal. But sex, that was personal because you could feel it and both of you knew it was another person. “Anyway, I gotta bank this and log. Talk to you later!”

“Later,” Jericho said as his mind immediately shifted to finding a hooker. He looked around and noticed they were all taken. The show had clearly given everybody the same idea. “Figures.”

Jericho could have looked for another tavern or tried to seduce an NPC but figured it’d be better to do something productive. Terra was so far ahead of him in wealth it was absurd. He was a good alchemist thanks to the high intellect stats and ability to read encrypted recipes. But most of that gold was spent on rare scrolls and books to figure out magic.

To call the magic system problematic was an understatement. While basic spells were easy in the sense that conjuring them was simply about finding core runes and mentally focusing on those runes, they quickly became insanely complex.

In an interview, the most powerful mage in the game, Owl, described mastering fireball as memorizing a short poem. Every time you want to cast the fireball, you recite the poem in your head and the ball is formed, then you aim it and fire it. Mastering pillar of fire was like reciting that same poem in your head ten times overlapping. Mixing magic, like fire and wind to create an explosion, was like reciting two different poems simultaneously.

When asked why they designed it like this the developers had answered, “Mages study for lifetimes to master a single spell. We’re not listening to co
mplaints about this system. If you can’t figure it out, you’re probably not mage material. We will say this, you’re doing it wrong.”

Jericho agreed with them to an extent but he wished it could be a bit easier. He also never really agreed with Owl’s definition. He always felt it was more like a song. Sure, there might be a hundred notes all over the place, but it was still one song. Fire magic was one note and Wind was another. They could be played simultaneously, quickly, slowly, hard or soft.

“Castle Black,” Jericho said while tossing the portal NPC a few gold coins. He walked through and immediately was standing at the foot of a level eighty dungeon. Nobody in the game had cleared it, the third boss was deemed impossible and the developers refused to budge. Rather than nerf dungeons they added new ones. Some easier, some harder.

So, obviously Jericho had no intention of going in but he’d been searching books for information and one of them mentioned an NPC named Alistair Nightshade, the mage of Castle Black before its downfall. It also suggested that the mages laboratory wasn’t inside the castle but in the nearby forest.

Jericho figured as long as he was careful, he wouldn’t have any issues exploring the area. He’d come prepared with several invisibility and swiftness potions just in case he ran into trouble. He also had several explosives but they wouldn’t be enough to take on high-level monsters.

He began searching the woods around Castle Black while avoiding any suspicious sounds. Even wolves and serpents in the area would be more than he could handle since their base level was nearly eighty.

While death wasn’t a particularly big deal, if you didn’t reach your corpse in thirty minutes it decayed and the items were lost. That wouldn’t be much of an issue if the developers hadn’t made sure that almost all dungeons were located over thirty minutes away from graveyards.

“Ow,” he said stubbing his toe on a rock. He held his breath and listened for anything he might have disturbed. After being convinced nothing was coming toward him, he continued exploring. After a while, he realized he was searching areas he’d already searched and started to become frustrated. He decided to give up and try again another day.
